5 Clever Pumpkin Carving Tips and Tricks
In theory, you know how to carve a pumpkin, right? Cut out the top, scoop out the insides, sketch your carving, and saw at it until you have a jack-o'-lantern. But the process doesn’t have to be quite so arduous. Here are 5 things you should do to make the best jack-o'-lantern ever:
Instead of slicing a round hole in the top, cut a slot out of the back, too.
Use your metal ice cream scoop to carve out the guts, instead of the small orange scoop that you get with pumpkin carving kits.
Draw your design on a piece of paper, then tape it to your pumpkin and use a wooden skewer or the tool that comes with a carving kit to transfer the pattern.
Carve a slightly deeper, candle-shaped hole on the inside of your pumpkin to keep the candle steady.
Give your pumpkins a bleach bath then coat the carved parts in petroleum jelly to help prevent rot.
