Here's how to get rid of fruit flies

3 Ways to Finally Beat the Fruit Flies

If this is your first year with your own kitchen, raise your hands! Welcome to college, or to living in your own apartment. Now, keep your hands up in the air if you have fruit flies already! Thought so. But that’s okay! Even people who have had their own kitchens for years and years still get the little pests. Here are a few tips to combat them:

Do your dishes: Don’t leave dishes with food or anything besides water in them in your sink overnight. If you have a garbage disposal, be sure to run it after every time you cook, and don’t leave food in it overnight. If you don’t have a garbage disposal, never leave small bits of food sitting in your drain, and always rinse your sink out well after doing dishes.

Hide produce: Don’t keep fruit or vegetables out on the countertop, because that’s where they like to lay their eggs the most. Use a trash can with a lid, and take the trash out regularly, especially if you put food waste in your trash. If you compost, take your compost out daily.

Trap them: Fill up a glass jar with about an inch of straight apple cider vinegar. Add a drop of dish soap — this helps break the surface tension. Put a square of plastic wrap over it that isn’t much bigger than the jar. Poke holes in the plastic wrap with a fork or toothpick, making them just a little bigger than the flies. Secure it to the top of the jar with a rubber band.
